Joaquín Palting is a visual artist, photographer, and educator whose work engages landscape as a conceptual, cultural, and psychological site. Raised in an academic household, Palting was exposed to both artistic and scientific inquiry early on. His mother, a landscape photographer and Professor, taught photography at institutions of higher education and led workshops from their home, while his father, a noted theoretical chemist, made significant contributions to research in quantum mechanics. This dual exposure to creative and analytical modes of thinking continues to inform Palting’s interdisciplinary approach to image-making.
Palting’s earliest experiences assisting his mother in the field established a foundational relationship to landscape and photographic practice. Her training under Brett Weston and Jerry Uelsmann situates Palting within a historical photographic lineage that subtly informs his own work, particularly in its attention to abstraction, perception, and the psychological dimensions of place.
Early in his career, Palting relocated to Los Angeles, where he established himself as an editorial and advertising photographer working bi-coastally between Los Angeles and New York. His commercial practice included assignments for major publications and brands, including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Nike, Nordstrom, Foot Locker, Virgin, Warner Bros. Records, and Sony.
In 2015, Palting shifted his primary focus from commercial photography to developing a research-driven art practice alongside a career in higher education. His artistic work is known for its conceptual storytelling and is realized through still photography, video, and performance. His work has been exhibited internationally and featured by leading contemporary photography platforms, including Aperture, Der Greif, Float Magazine, Landscape Stories, LensCulture, Lenscratch, and Urbanautica.
In parallel with his studio practice, Palting is an active and highly regarded educator. He has taught photography and art at a range of institutions and cultural organizations, including San Diego State University, University of California, Irvine, Medium Photo, Los Angeles Center of Photography, and the Laguna Art Museum.
Palting is currently a Lecturer of Art at San Diego State University. He holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine.
